I desperately looked for someone to help me because I didn't believe I could help myself. Then I was excited to see a weight loss counselling group starting locally, but sadly it turned it to be a sales pitch for a low calorie milkshake diet. I was getting really fed up with false promises and dishonest diet programmes looking to make money from my situation.

I was looking for someone who could really help me and I was willing to pay, I would have paid anything at that point! Only what I was looking for didn't exist. (Lucky for you it does now, because what I do is help people just like you to stop overeating, lose weight , have a normal relationship with food and great body confidence).

How did I start to resolve my problem? Well, in asking myself the question, "What can I do, without dieting, to lose weight permanently?" I started a train of thought which ultimately led me to discover the true facts about what really works.

When I started to experiment with what I had learned, I felt that I was losing weight and after a few weeks was thrilled to see that I had in fact lost 11 pounds of fat! And I was eating food I enjoyed, food that I had banned for years - like fish and chips and chocolate. I felt the best I had felt in years - free, optimistic, excited - and all without dieting, yipee!

But I digress. We will return to my story in a moment but first I want to share with you a crucial fact that stopped me dieting forever...

Diets don't work - it's official

The route to fat loss is no longer about dieting. Scientists have known for some time that dieting doesn't work and that yo-yo dieting makes you fatter.

In one study in 1986, Dr Kelly Brownell, put rats on a series of weight loss diets between which they were fed normally. Each time they lost the weight on the diet, only to put it all back on and with extra, much more quickly than in previous attempts. Then, when they dieted again, the weight came off more slowly than earlier attempts.

And other researchers have come to similar conclusions:

In 2007, UCLA researchers Dr Traci Mann and colleagues conducted the most comprehensive and rigorous analysis of diet studies. Of the dieters followed for two or more years, 83% gained back more weight than they had lost. Five years after the diet 50% of dieters were 11 pounds heavier than their original starting weight. The research was published in the Journal of the American Psychological Association.

But back to my story for a moment...

It was 2002 and I had let go of dieting and was doing something else instead. Well, I steadily lost 50 pounds of fat (about 4 stones) which took me from about a size 22 to a size 12/14. As this happened, I felt that I passionately wanted to tell the world about how dieting is a big con and what to do instead...

I was already a busy therapist helping people recover from irritable bowel, hormone imbalances, cancer and so on. In the clinic where I worked, therapist colleagues and patients had started to comment on my weight loss and asked what I had done and I told them I had stopped dieting.
